This wonderful smell of mandarins, cinnamon and spice at a German Christmas market will get stronger when you walk past a booth that is selling Glühwein. My family and I have spend a wonderful time around Christmas and New year in Germany if you like to know more about our trip to Germany and the magical time we had and all the great tradition around Christmas (read here).
One tradition I like to remember around the holidays is enjoying Glühwein with my family even though we are back in the States. There are lots of different types of this delicious hot beverage. Red, white, with or without alcohol.
My family traditionally drinks Glühwein around Christmas when we sit together on a cold winter day and spend time with family. Christmas eve would be one night when this drink would be served hot, while we would open presents.
I would love to share my recipe with you and all you need is this:
(No alcohol )
1 64 oz bottle Apple juice
1 64 oz bottle Grape juice
1 TL Ginger, powder or 2 Tea bags of ginger (optional)
2 Tsp. Vanilla sugar
1 Cinnamon stick
1 Anise star (1Tsp. Anise extract)
Bring all the ingredients together in a large pot. Slice the mandarins and let everything simmer for about 15 min, until everything is hot. Serve hot with some cookies and enjoy a cold winter evening with this delicious hot beverage from Germany called “Glühwein”. Not only will it keep you warm but it will make your entire house smell like Christmas.
